At Save The River, our mission is to protect and preserve the Upper St. Lawrence River now and for generations to come. While many of our cleanup efforts focus primarily on removing litter from our shorelines and water, our LittaTrap™ Program targets a major unseen culprit of River pollution: Urban Stormwater Runoff.
A LittaTrap™ is an innovative catch basin that sits directly in existing storm drains. As rain falls, it sweeps up plastic, cigarette butts, and other trash, carrying it directly into the drainage network. Instead of letting these pollutants discharge directly into the River, our LittaTrap™ intercepts them. Its patented basket captures and stores solids while allowing clean water to pass right through. It acts as the last line of defense, trapping pollution at the street level before it ever has a chance to touch the water.
We have installed two LittaTraps™ on Mary Street site here in Clayton, NY. Our team regularly goes out to empty the bins and ensure they operate as efficiently as possible, keeping this pollution out of the River and disposing of it responsibly.
